Sky Overseas + Offseason Updates: Rundown No. 14

CHICAGO (February 5, 2024) — Nine Chicago Sky players are currently participating in domestic or overseas play this offseason. Below are the listed players, their respective teams, league and country.

Kahleah Copper was named to the 2024 USA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament Team following a three-day training camp. The team competes in Antwerp, Belgium from Feb. 8-11. Copper is one of 12 athletes to make the roster. View the full announcement by USA Basketball here

The United States qualified for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games by way of a gold medal finish at the 2022 World Cup, but still participates in the qualifying tournament. The United States is set to play Belgium on Feb. 8, Nigeria on Feb. 9 and Senegal on Feb. 11.

Additionally, Copper signed an agreement with CBK Mersin and will suit up for the club after she concludes national team play. Copper joins current Chicago Sky players Elizabeth Williams and Marina Mabrey on Mersin’s roster.

Williams stuffed the stat sheet last week, recording a combined 32 points, 21 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks across two games. In the Feb. 3 loss to Beşiktaş, Williams secured a 19-point, 14-rebound double-double. That game marked her ninth game this overseas season with 10 or more rebounds. She finished January averaging 15.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals.

Mabrey had seven points and nine assists in the Jan. 30 loss to USK Praha before recording 19 points, eight rebounds and led all players with seven assists on Feb. 3. She finished the month of January with averages of 23.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists.

Mersin is now 13-9 in the Turkish League standings and is 9-5 in EuroLeague play. Williams and Mabrey next take the court for Mersin on Feb. 21 and 28 for EuroLeague matchups with Zaragoza.

Lindsay Allen played in one game for Botas last week after signing with the Sky on Feb. 1, helping her team to a 130-65 victory over Hatay. She recorded a 20-point, 12-assist double-double while hitting nine of her 10 shot attempts (90.0%). In addition to leading all players in assists, she tied for a game-high nine rebounds. 

Allen is averaging 14.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 8.3 assists on the season. She scored a 2023-24 overseas high 28 points on Jan. 21 against Fenerbahçe. In that game, she also recorded seven rebounds and 10 assists. Allen scored 15 points and an overseas season high of 15 assists on Jan. 7 against Mersin.

Botas is 9-12 in Turkish League play this season and is 0.5 games behind Emlak for eighth.

Sika Koné had a big week for Avenida, scoring a season-high 24 points against Gran Canaria to go along with 11 rebounds to help extend Avenida’s win streak to six. In that victory, on Feb. 2, Koné’s 24 points and 11 rebounds led all players. Koné also recorded a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double on Jan. 30 against Uni Gyor.

During Avenida’s current win streak, Koné is averaging 13.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in six games. Avenida is still 1.0 games out of first place in the Spanish League standings at 16-4. The club is also 8-6 and in fourth in EuroLeague’s Group B standings. Koné is next expected to play on Feb. 17, when Avenida takes on Ferrol.

Rebekah Gardner and Morgan Bertsch combined to score 22 points on Feb. 1 against Cadi La Seu, pushing Girona to its sixth straight win. Gardner scored overseas season highs of 14 points and seven rebounds while not missing any of her shot attempts. Her 14 points led all players, while Bertsch scored eight points in the victory.

Girona is now 14-6 in Spanish League play. Gardner and Bertsch are next set to play on Feb. 18 in a Spanish League matchup with Zaragoza.

Dana Evans helped lift Beşiktaş over Williams and Mabrey’s Mersin on Feb. 3, scoring 23 points to lead all scorers in the win. The victory broke a two-game skid for Beşiktaş and was the club’s fifth win in its past seven games. Evans also led her team in assists with six and played her third straight 40-minute game.

The Turkish League victory kept Beşiktaş in fourth in the domestic league standings at 14-7. Evans and Beşiktaş are next scheduled to play a pair of EuroLeague games against BLMA on Feb. 22 and 29.

Robyn Parks and Schio fell to Valencia on Jan. 30 before bouncing back with an Italian League victory over Sassari on Feb. 3. Parks scored two points and three rebounds against Valencia before recording five points and seven rebounds in the win over Sassari. Parks finished January averaging 12.8 points.

With the EuroLeague loss last week, Schio is tied with Miskolc and Zaragoza for second in the Group A standings with a 9-5 record. Parks and Schio are next scheduled to play on Feb. 17 against Roma in Italian League play.

Chicago Sky players currently overseas are a combined 115-48 (.706 win percentage) with their teams so far this season when joining their team.
