Chicago Sky Home Opener Set for Saturday, May 14

Led by the WNBA’s reigning MVP Elena Delle Donne, back-to-back Sixth Woman of the Year Allie Quigley and six-time WNBA All-Star Cappie Pondexter, the Sky begins the 34-game regular season against the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, May 14 at Allstate Arena. Returning Head Coach Pokey Chatman, Chicago enters its eleventh WNBA season with an experienced roster following a third consecutive playoff appearance.

The 2016 season will feature a new, more balanced regular-season schedule highlighted by more cross-conference games. Details of the new format are available at www.wnba.com/news/regular-season-playoff-format-changes-2016-season/

“Balancing the schedule offers WNBA fans around the country more opportunities to see their favorite players in a nearby city,” said Sky President and CEO Adam Fox. “The change adds variety and excitement at all levels of the business and showcases the league’s increasing talent pool as we begin the W’s 20th season.”

Additionally, with as many as 25 WNBA players likely to represent their respective countries at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de JaneiroBrazil, from Aug. 5-21, the league has not scheduled any games from July 23 through Aug. 25. After the 2016 Summer Olympics the WNBA will tip off the second half of its season on Friday, Aug. 26.

Chicago’s 2016 schedule features a nationally televised matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks led by Naperville Central High School graduate Candace Parker on May 24. Tip off is set for 6:00pm CDT at Allstate Arena. Other highlights include visits from 2015 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year presented by Samsung Brittney Griner and the Phoenix Mercury on July 10 and Notre Dame graduate Skylar Diggins of the Dallas Wings on July 15. Chicago-native Jewell Loyd will return joined by the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft on Friday, September 2 when the Sky welcomes the Seattle Storm. Tip off is set for 7:30pm CDT.

Throughout the 2016 regular season, the Sky will host two Camp Days and a School Day game on May 18 against the defending champion Minnesota Lynx. The matinee games offer Chicago area youth the opportunity to cheer on their hometown team through educational and entertaining field trips. The first camp day game will take place on June 29 with the second game slated for July 13 against the Los Angeles Sparks.The Sky will close out the regular season at home with “Fan Appreciation Night” as they play host to the New York Liberty at 7:30pm CDT.
