Week 1: George Washington Patriots

The Chicago Sky has selected George Washington High School as the first weekly winner of its 2016 “High School Team of the Week” program. They earn the honor after being nominated for their undefeated spirits in off-the-court endeavors and academic achievements.

The George Washington Patriots are showing their resilience this season in the face of adversity. The team has had to adapt to limited practice space and resources. The Patriots have risen above these challenges and found creative ways to utilize their limited space. Coming off a 13-3 record last season, the Patriots are currently 1-3 on the season and boast a starting lineup of two seniors and three freshmen. Despite facing adversity, the players pride themselves on always working as a team and giving full effort at every practice and game.

Off the court, the Patriots are dedicated in the classroom and inspiring the community. The team strives for academic excellence and has a 3.0 team grade point average. Additionally, each player on the Patriots’ roster commits more than 40 hours to service in the community during the school year. In spite of the challenges the players face, they aim to overcome obstacles for the sport and serve as role models to young girls in the community.

George Washington is the first program to be recognized as a 2016 award recipient. As a Chicago Sky “High School Basketball Team of the Week” award winner, the George Washington Patriots are invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.
