Sky vs Mystics Preview 8/02
On Sunday, August 4 the Chicago Sky will host the Washington Mystics for its second straight home game of a five game home stand. Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm CT at Allstate Arena.
Chicago is entering Sunday’s contest after a tough 88-77 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. Nevertheless, this won’t stop the Sky from battling for its eighth home win on Sunday. Washington’s most recent game ended in an 88-53 victory over the San Antonio Stars led by 15 points from Kia Vaughn.
The season series is split thus far between these teams with each one securing a win. On June 28 the Mystics captured the first win with an 86-71 victory. Elena Delle Donne’s 26 points and seven rebounds were not enough to defeat Washington. Stefanie Dolson poured in 20 points while Emma Meesseman added 19 for the Mystics.
The teams met again on July 15 when Washington traveled to Allstate Arena on Camp Day. This time the Sky was victorious defeating the Mystics 85-57, the team’s largest margin of victory this season. Allie Quigley led the Sky with 15 points off the bench. Cappie Pondexter (14), Jamierra Faulkner (12), Clarissa Dos Santos (11) and Delle Donne (11) also scored in double-digits. Washington was led by 15 points from Dolson and 13 points from Tierra Ruffin-Pratt.
In the Sky’s defeat of the Mystics, rebounding and points in the paint were two key areas that assisted in the win. The Sky outrebounded the Mystics 46-32 and outscored them in the paint 40-22. A similar showing on the court on Friday should leave the Sky with another home victory.
In addition, Chicago continues to place a lot of focus on its defense. A strong performance on the defensive end of the court translates to the team’s offensive success.
“We’re going to let our defense dictate what’s going to happen. Lately whenever our defense and rebounding is good that’s when everything goes smoothly,” Allie Quigley said after the July 15 game.
