Sky vs Mystics Preview 7/15
Mon, Jul 13, 2015, 3:48 AM
The Chicago Sky will host the Washington Mystics for the first time this season at Allstate Arena on July 15. The Sky aims to get its first win against the Mystics in the teams’ five-game series that continues Wednesday with the Sky’s second “Camp Day” of the season.
Wednesday will be the last of a three-game home stand for the Sky. The team is coming off an exciting 96-76 win over the first-placed Connecticut Sun on July 12. Cappie Pondexter had an impressive performance, setting two season highs with 29 points and seven assists. The Mystics enter Wednesday’s game with a record of 6-5 after falling to the New York Liberty in its last game.
In Chicago and Washington’s first meeting on June 28th, the Mystics maintained a consistent lead over the Sky and pulled away with an 86-71 victory at the Verizon Center. After being tied 4-4 in the first two minutes of the first quarter, the Sky fell behind to Washington’s well-balanced efforts. Chicago succumbed to a 20-point deficit sparked by Stefanie Dolson’s 12 points in the third quarter. Delle Donne led all scorers with 26 points, but it was not enough to overcome a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double from Dolson and 20 points from Mystics center Emma Meesseman.
The Mystics were shooting 52.6% from behind the arc in the last matchup. In order for the Sky to prevent such a large deficit in this game, the team must be more consistent defensively. Chicago allowed Washington too many open three-point looks in game one, which gave the Mystics momentum on offense. A more consistent game plan Wednesday should help the Sky secure a victory.
