Sky vs Mystics Preview 8/23
On Sunday, August 23 the Chicago Sky will travel to Washington, D.C. for the second game of a back-to-back matchup against the Mystics. Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm CT at Verizon Center. After defeating Washington 87-85 on Friday night at Allstate Arena, Chicago maintained the lead of the season series, now 3-1.
In the August 21 contest, the Mystics were led by 20 points from forward, Emma Meesseman. Stefanie Dolson and Kara Lawson added 14 and 13 points, respectively for Washington. Those performances were not enough to top a dominant show from the Sky.
Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 22 points in addition to grabbing 8 rebounds. Allie Quigley followed with 20 points off the bench, 16 of which were in the second half of the game. Quigley was responsible for the game-winning three-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining to put the Sky up by two and seal the victory.
While the spotlight shined on Quigley in those final seconds, the performance of Courtney Vandersloot cannot go unnoticed. Vandersloot was just shy of recording a triple-double. The point guard dished out 10 assists, scored nine points, and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.
“She’s our general, she’s everything. We look to her to provide the offense,” Cappie Pondexter said of her teammate.
Vandersloot’s direction on the court was a large factor in the Sky’s win over the Mystics Friday. Another element that contributed to Chicago’s victory was the team’s performance in the front court. The Sky dominated under the basket, outrebounding the Mystics 45-27 and scoring 44 points in the paint compared to Washington’s 32. The Sky will need to carry this momentum into Sunday’s game in order to defeat the Mystics on their home court.
