Sky Overseas + Offseason Updates: Rundown No. 12

CHICAGO (January 22, 2024) — Eleven Chicago Sky players are currently participating in domestic or overseas play this offseason. Below are the listed players, their respective teams, league and country.

Kahleah Copper was announced today as a member of the 18-athlete roster for the USA Basketball Women’s National Team minicamp in early February. The camp is set for Feb. 2-4 and following it, 12 athletes will be selected to represent the United States at the 2024 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament set for Feb. 8-11 in Antwerp, Belgium.

The United States qualified for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games by way of a gold medal finish at the 2022 World Cup, but still participates in the qualifying tournament. The United States is set to play Belgium on Feb. 8, Nigeria on Feb. 9 and Senegal on Feb. 11. View the official press release here.

Alanna Smith made the 12-athlete qualifying team for the Australian National Team ahead of the 2024 FIBA qualifying tournament. The qualifying tournament for the Seven Consulting Opals runs from Feb. 8-11 in Belem, Brazil, where they’ll play Brazil, Germany and Serbia in their pool. View the official press release here.

Marina Mabrey and Elizabeth Williams had a productive week for Mersin, leading the team to a 64-61 EuroLeague victory over Bologna on Jan. 17 before falling 94-98 in overtime to Nesibe on Jan. 20. With the win over Bologna, Mersin moved to within 2.0 games of USK Praha for first place in the EuroLeague Group B standings.

Mabrey led all players in points, rebounds and assists in the win over Bologna, recording 19 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, a block and a steal. In the following game, Mabrey led all scorers with 36 points. Her 36 points are an overseas season high.

Williams recorded 14 points, five assists and four steals against Bologna, tying her 2023-24 overseas high for steals in a game. She followed that performance up by posting a 13-point, 18-rebound double-double against Nesibe. Williams also recorded six blocks and three steals in the overtime loss. Her 18 rebounds and six blocks were overseas season highs.

Mabrey and Williams are next scheduled to play on Jan. 24 in a EuroLeague matchup with UNI Gyor. The pair will get a chance to play USK Praha, the top seed of EuroLeague’s Group B, on Jan. 30.

Morgan Bertsch and Rebekah Gardner helped extend Girona’s win streak to four, picking up wins over Cadi La Seu and Estudiantes this week. The win over Cadi La Seu moved Girona to 10-0 on the year in EuroCup play across the regular season and postseason. Meanwhile, defeating Estudiantes broke a tie between the two teams in Turkish League play and Girona took sole possession of fourth in the standings at 12-6.

Bertsch led all scorers in the victory over Cadi La Seu, recording 13 points on 83.3% (5 of 6) shooting. She also added three steals, two assists and two rebounds in the win. Bertsch scored seven points in the 65-56 win over Estudiantes on Jan. 20.

Gardner played 33 minutes across her two appearances this week, filling the stat sheet off the bench. She recorded five points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 18 minutes against Cadi La Seu before scoring two points, four rebounds and two steals against Estudiantes.

Bertsch and Gardner are next scheduled to continue Spanish League play against Ferrol on Jan. 27. Bertsch, Gardner and the rest of Girona continue EuroCup play on Feb. 22, advancing to the quarterfinals where they’ll play Galatasaray.

Dana Evans and Beşiktaş fell to Bourges in their one game this week, losing 76-79 on Jan. 17. Evans recorded her fourth 30-point game of the 2023-24 overseas season in the loss, ending with 31 points on 55.0% (11 of 20) shooting. The performance marked Evans’ second 30-point game in her past four outings. Evans is averaging 24.2 points per game in January.

Evans and Beşiktaş are next scheduled to continue EuroCup play in the quarterfinals against BLMA on Feb. 22.

Robyn Parks helped lead Schio to a pair of important victories over the past week, defeating Lyon in EuroLeague play on Jan. 17 and Venezia on Jan. 21. Beating Lyon kept Schio within 2.0 games of Fenerbahce, who sits atop the EuroLeague Group A standings. Meanwhile, defeating top-ranked Venezia in Italian League play moved Schio to third place in the standings and 2.5 games back of first.

Parks led all players in minutes played against Lyon, recording 13 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win. She followed that up by contributing 11 points, four rebounds and two assists in the victory over Venezia.

Parks and Schio are next scheduled to continue EuroLeague play on Jan. 24 in a game against Zaragoza. Schio and Zaragoza are currently tied in the Group A standings at 8-4.

Sika Koné’s Avenida won both of its games this week, defeating Landes on Jan. 17 and Bembibre on Jan. 20. Avenida won both games by 25 or more points, with Koné averaging 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in those two games.

Avenida is just 1.0 games behind Valencia and Zaragoza for first in the Spanish League standings after its two wins this week. Koné and Avenida continue league play on Jan. 24 against Polkowice.

Taylor Soule and San Martino fell to Faenza in their one game this week, losing 61-69 on Jan. 21. Soule played 35 minutes in the matchup, scoring seven points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists and one steal.

San Martino now sits at 8-6 in league play, good for sixth in the standings. Soule and San Martino are next scheduled to play on Feb. 3 against Kayseri.

Courtney Williams wrapped up overseas play with Shaanxi. She finished the 2023-24 overseas season with averages of 19.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 24 games.

Chicago Sky players currently overseas are a combined 125-77 (.619 win percentage) with their teams so far this season when joining their team.
