Sky Overseas + Offseason Updates: Rundown No. 10

CHICAGO (January 8, 2024) — Eleven Chicago Sky players are currently participating in domestic or overseas play this offseason. Below are the listed players, their respective teams, league and country.

Dana Evans helped lead Beşiktaş to a 3-1 record over the team’s last four regular season games, averaging 23.8 points and 7.3 assists during that stretch. Evans led all scorers in two of those games with dominant wins over Žabiny Brno and Tarsus.

Beşiktaş fell to Alanna Smith’s Emlak Konut in a two-point loss for the latter, though Evans recorded 21 points and seven assists. Beşiktaş rebounded the following game, defeating Antalya 98-70.

Beşiktaş played in two Turkish Cup games, defeating Izmit 95-85 on Jan. 2 before losing in the next round to Marina Mabrey and Elizabeth Williams’ Mersin on Jan. 4 in overtime, 84-87. In the first game against Izmit, Evans led all players in points and assists, recording a 27-point, 12-assist double-double. In the matchup with Mersin, Evans scored 25 points to go along with nine assists and five boards.

Beşiktaş and Evans play today, Jan. 8, against Kayseri in a Turkish League matchup.

After falling to Estudiantes on Dec. 16, Morgan Bertsch and Girona won three straight games from Dec. 20-29. Bertsch’s most productive game in that stretch came against Gernika on Dec. 23, where she recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in 26 minutes of play.

Girona is 3-2 in its previous five games, with Bertsch averaging 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.6 blocks during that stretch. Bertsch finished December averaging 11.7 points. 

Girona next takes on Cadi La Seu on Jan. 11 and 18 in the next round of EuroCup play. Girona previously defeated Cadi La Seu on Dec. 19, 72-59. Bertsch recorded seven points and five rebounds in that win.

Sika Koné and Avenida dropped close games to Bologna on Dec. 20 and Celta Zorka on Dec. 22, marking five straight losses for the club. Three of those losses in a row were decided by four or fewer points. However, Koné and Avenida bounced back and posted three straight victories from Dec. 30-Jan. 6.

During this five-game stretch, Koné averaged 13.8 points and 7.2 rebounds. She led Avenida in scoring three times and led in rebounding four times.

Avenida continues its regular season EuroLeague schedule against USK Praha on Jan. 10. Avenida and Koné previously fell to USK Praha on Oct. 25, 53-64.

Mersin has dropped four of its past five regular season games, but Marina Mabrey and Elizabeth Williams recorded several noteworthy performances during that skid. Mabrey did not play in the past two regular season games, but averaged 26.0 points on 45.6% shooting from the floor and 39.3% from beyond the arc on 9.3 attempts per game before that.

Mabrey recorded a double-double on Dec. 26 in a close loss to Izmit, scoring 27 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. In total, Mabrey averaged 20.6 points in December, including 25.2 points in her past six regular season games.

After totalling 23 points and 15 rebounds in two games on Dec. 20 and 23, Elizabeth Williams missed Mersin’s next two outings before returning with a 15-point, eight-rebound performance against Botas.

Williams finished December with averages of 13.0 points and 8.1 rebounds across seven regular season appearances.

Mersin played its way to the Turkish Cup championship on Jan. 5 by taking down Galatasaray on Jan. 2 and Evans’ Beşiktaş on Jan. 4. In the win over Galatasaray, Mabrey and Williams combined to score 54 points, with Mabrey recording 24 points and making four of her nine three-point attempts, to go along with six rebounds and nine assists. Williams made 14 of her 17 field-goal attempts in that win, securing 30 points and seven boards.

In the following round, on Jan. 4, Mabrey led the scoring charge, recording 34 points along with seven rebounds and nine assists. Williams scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds. In the championship game, Mersin lost a close, 76-79 overtime game against Fenerbahce. Williams and Mabrey both flirted with a triple-double in that game, with Williams recording 15 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists while Mabrey led all scorers with 23 points along with 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Both Mabrey and Williams finished with 2023 overseas season highs nearly across the board. Williams’ 30 points on Jan. 2 and her 15 rebounds on Jan. 5 were both overseas highs while Mabrey’s 34 points on Jan. 4, 11 rebounds on Jan. 5 and nine assists (twice) were all season highs.

Mersin is scheduled to play Polkowice in a EuroLeague matchup on Jan. 10. Mersin previously defeated Polkowice 77-57 on Oct. 24.

Taylor Soule and San Martino played two regular season games over the past three weeks, defeating Sassari 98-80 on Dec. 23 before falling to Venezia 55-70 on Dec. 30. In the win over Sassari, Soule recorded 15 points and three assists. 

In Italian Cup play, Soule recorded a 21-point, 10 rebound double-double, her first of the season, though San Martino fell to Roma.

Robyn Parks and Schio went 1-2 in their past three regular season games, with Parks averaging 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in those outings. Her best performance during that stretch came against Bologna on Dec. 27, a game in which Parks led all scorers with 19 points while shooting 6 of 13 from the floor.

Parks and Schio have played in one Italian Cup game so far, defeating Roma 81-72 on Jan. 7. Parks finished that game with 18 points on 50.0% shooting, hitting four of eight threes.

Alanna Smith secured an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double a Dec. 27 victory over Evans’ Beşiktaş, with Emlak snapping a seven-game losing streak. Emlak went 2-2 over its past four regular season games, with Smith averaging 18.5 points and 8.8 rebounds. 

Smith and Emlak appeared in just one Turkish Cup game, falling 63-72 to Ormanspor. Smith recorded four points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Courtney Williams and Shaanxi snapped a nine-game losing streak by defeating Tianjin on Dec. 23. Williams recorded an overseas season-high 35 points to go along with a then-season 14 rebounds to power the Red Wolves to the win. Then, in the following game, Williams recorded her first triple-double in overseas play this year, scoring 21 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists. Her 15 rebounds and 13 assists led all players and were both season highs.

Williams and Shaanxi don’t play again until Feb. 17.

Rebekah Gardner has not yet appeared in a game for Girona.

Chicago Sky players currently overseas are a combined 110-70 (.611 win percentage) with their teams so far this season when joining their team.
