Courtney Vandersloot – The Assister
It’s no secret that Courtney Vandersloot has always stepped up on the court when it comes to assisting the team. During her career, playing both college and professional basketball, she has set all-time assists records and continues today to assist her teammates to victory.
During her time playing for Gonzaga, Vandersloot dished out multiple double-digit assists in numerous games. Between the 2009-2011 seasons, the team went 15-1 at home and 12-2 away when she assisted at least 10 times in a single game. Vandersloot recorded a total of 1,118 assists during her time at Gonzaga. She even set the NCAA record for men and women with 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in her college career. In addition, Vandersloot set the record for assists in a single season for NCAA Division 1 with 367 assists.
Her time as a professional basketball player has been nothing short of impressive either. She has made the WNBA Single Season Leaders and Records for Assists list with 184 assists in the 2013 season. The team’s record when Vandersloot dishes out 5 or more assists is 40-23. This regular season, she has continued this trend and currently holds a record of 3-2 when there are 5 or more assists. Vandersloot has shattered leader records while playing for the Chicago Sky. In the 2013-2014 season, Vandersloot tied Diana Taurasi in assists per game with 5.6 apg. She remains in first place in this 2014-2015 season. Vandersloot remains ranked number one in assisting percentage from the 2013-2014 season with 37.2%.
She is on her way to breaking even more career leader records for the Chicago Sky from 3-point field goals to total number of career steals. She will soon move to number five on the list for number of games started for the Sky, with 112 games started to date. She is ranked number one for assists for the Sky by a landslide, with 623 total assists. The Sky player who is closest to Vandersloot in career assists for the Sky is Dominique Canty, who finished her career with 507 assists. Vandersloot has also stepped up from behind the arc and made 84 total 3-point jumpers to recently take the 5th spot for the all-time 3-pointer leaders list for the Chicago Sky.
Vandersloot has more than proved she is worthy of attention throughout the time playing the game she loves. Vandersloot fulfills a pivotal role on the court for the Sky and they will continue to look to her for assistance in the team’s success as they chase a WNBA Championship in 2015.
