Sky by the Numbers
Top of the Ranks
The Sky is currently ranked first in the WNBA in numerous statistical categories. Chicago is first in field goals made per game (33.3), field goal percentage (.475), free throws made per game (18.5), free throw percentage (.860), defensive rebounds per game (29.3), blocks per game (7.5) and points per game (87.8).
Significant Improvement
Not only does Chicago rank first in these statistical categories, the team’s numbers have also improved significantly from the 2014 season. Through the first four games of the 2015 season, the Sky are scoring over 10 more points per game than in 2014 and are averaging more made field goals and free throws than the previous season. Chicago has also increased its blocks per game from 5.9 to 7.5 and rebounds per game from 34.1 in 2014 to 39.3 so far in 2015.
Delle Donne’s Historic Start
Through the first four games of the season, Elena Delle Donne has scored 122 points, for an average of 30.5 points per game. She completely destroyed her previous scoring totals from the first four games of the 2012 (74 points) and 2013 (94 points) seasons. She is leading the WNBA in scoring and is averaging over 10 more points per game than the league’s second leading scorer, Angel McCoughtry. If Delle Donne keeps this up, she could set the WNBA record for scoring average in a season, set by Diana Taurasi when she averaged 25.3 points per game in 2006.
Cappie in the WNBA Record Books
On June 14th, Cappie Pondexter passed Katie Smith to move into 11th on the WNBA’s all-time assists list. She currently has 1,260 assists in her career and is only 15 assists shy of 10th on the all-time list. She is also set to play in her 300th WNBA game on Friday as the Sky take on the Atlanta Dream. Through her first four games in a Chicago Sky uniform, Pondexter is averaging 15.8 points per game as well as 4.5 rebounds per game. At 5’9”, Pondexter is the Sky’s third leading rebounder and is second on the team in minutes played per game (30.5).
