Sky Wins Fifth Straight; Moves to No. 5 in WNBA Standings

GAME HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE

● Chicago picked up its fifth consecutive victory, a feat that has only been achieved three times in franchise history. There has only been one winning streak that has ended at five games for the Sky (July 7-July 20, 2013). Chicago has two six-game winning streaks in its 15 seasons (May 30-July 13, 2012 & August 15-31, 2013).

● For the 62nd time in her career, Courtney Vandersloot notched double digit assists (11).

● Guard Allie Quigley surpassed Sylvia Fowles for the most double figure scoring games in franchise history. Quigley has now scored at least 10 points 160 times in a Sky uniform.

NEXT UP: The Sky (7-7) begins a five-game road trip on Tuesday, June 22 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on the New York Liberty (6-6) at 6:00p CT. Sky fans can tune into WCIU The U or stream via Amazon Prime Video to follow the action. New York is coming off a 76-103 loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, June 17. It is finishing a four-game West Coast road trip with its matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks tomorrow, June 20. Chicago and New York will conclude their regular season series with another game from Brooklyn on Thursday, June 24.

KEY RUNS

Connecticut went on an 11-0 run throughout the later stages of the first quarter to push its lead to ten after it led 10-9 at the 3:50 mark. The Sun scored 11 of the final 14 points scored between each team in the opening frame.

● Chicago went on a 12-3 run in the second quarter to cut the Sun’s lead to two after the Sun led by 11 at the 9:43 mark.

● The Sky took its first lead of the game with 3:52 left in the second quarter after going on a 6-0 run.

● Chicago went on a 7-0 run late in the second quarter to extend its lead to seven, its largest of the game until that point.

● The Sun opened up the third quarter on a 13-0 run to regain the lead.

● The Sky went on a 13-8 run to take a one-point lead with 2:23 left in the third quarter.

● Chicago went on a 9-0 run to extend its lead to six to open the fourth quarter.

● The Sun tied the game with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter after going on an 8-2 run.

● The Sky went on an 18-4 run over a span of 4:15 minutes to claim a 13-point lead, its largest of the game.

 

KEY STATS

The Sky recorded just 12 points in the first quarter, its lowest scoring first quarter of the season (prev. low was at LAS 6/5).

● Sky recorded eight personal fouls in the first quarter (including one technical) while the Sun had just one.

● The Sky bench outscored the Sun bench 42 to 10.

● Chicago produced 16 fast break points while Connecticut had just seven. Sky came into today’s game averaging 9.7 fast break points per game.

 

CHICAGO NOTES

● Chicago’s starting lineup of Courtney Vandersloot, Diamond DeShields, Kahleah Copper, Candace Parker was used for the sixth time this season. The Sky remains undefeated (6-0) when that initial group is on the floor for tip-off. Likewise, Candace Parker has yet to lose as a member of the Sky when she has been active.

● Sky played in its fifth day game of the season in just 14 total contests. Chicago has four day games remaining in its 2021 schedule.

● After tallying its lowest first quarter total of the season, Chicago scored 28 points in the second, its highest second quarter total of 2021.
