Elena Delle Donne was selected by the Chicago Sky second overall in the 2013 WNBA Draft. Having graduated from the University of Delaware, Delle Donne was one of the Sky’s two highest draft picks in history, alongside Sylvia Fowles, who was also drafted second overall in 2008. Delle Donne was part of the “3 to See,” three highly anticipated college players that included Brittney Griner and Skylar Diggins, in addition to the Sky’s top draftee.
Delle Donne immediately showed the hype surrounding her was well founded, as she scored 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds in her debut and helping the Sky to a 102-80 blowout of Griner and the Phoenix Mercury. The 22 points was a Sky franchise record for points in a rookie debut and was the third highest total in WNBA history. Over the course of the 2013 season, Delle Donne played and started in 30 of the Sky’s 34 games and led the team in scoring with 18.1 points per game. Named an Eastern Conference All-Star during the season, Delle Donne became the first rookie in history to win the WNBA All-Star vote, although she missed the game due to a concussion. She finished the season with several franchise rookie records, including 54 blocks, 157 made free throws, and 543 points, which was good for 5th in the league. In addition, Delle Donne also led the league in free throw percentage with a 0.929 mark. For her efforts, Delle Donne took home all four of the season’s Rookie of the Month awards and was unanimously selected as the league’s Rookie of the Year.
In 2014, Delle Donne started the way she left off the year before, scoring more than 20 points in six of her first seven games and was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for May. However, Delle Donne was forced to miss 17 games in the middle of the season due to Lyme Disease, although she was still elected to the All-Star team as the top Eastern Conference vote getter, a game that she once again did not play in. While she missed more than half of the regular season, Delle Donne was back healthy for the Sky’s playoff run and played in a pivotal role in the team’s success, particularly in the Conference Semifinals against the Atlanta Dream.
In the series, Delle Donne led the team in scoring, including a then-career high 34 points in the third and deciding game of the series, a performance that helped the Sky pull off the largest fourth-quarter comeback in WNBA playoff history. Delle Donne made several clutch shots down the stretch in Game 3, including the game winner with 8.4 seconds left. In the WNBA Finals, Delle Donne played well, averaging 15.7 PPG, but the Sky lost to the Phoenix Mercury in three games.
Thus far in the 2015 season, Delle Donne has only built on her previous success. In only the second game of the season, Delle Donne scored 40 points against Tulsa, breaking Jia Perkins’ previous Sky record of 39 points in a game in 2007. Five games later, Delle Donne broke her own record by scoring 45 points in an overtime win against Atlanta, a contest in which she also became only the 5th player in WNBA history to score 40 or more points in two career games. In addition to her 45-point performance, Delle Donne also set a WNBA record for most consecutive free throws in one game without a miss, going 19-19 from the line. Her 19 consecutive free throws was also part of a streak in which Delle Donne made 54 consecutive free throws, a WNBA record for a single season. For her efforts in June, Delle Donne swept the Eastern Conference Player of the Week voting and was named Player of the Month.
Delle Donne was named to her third All-Star game, once again leading the league in total votes. In the game, Delle Donne scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in only 18 minutes of play.
The Sky star has led the league in scoring the entire season; her current average is 23.3 points per game. Delle Donne was named to the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time this season for games played August 17-August 23. With her scoring prowess, Delle Donne also reached 1,000 points in only 52 games, the third fastest to do so in WNBA history behind Cynthia Cooper and Diana Taurasi. Delle Donne is currently on pace to score more than 700 points this season, a feat that has only been accomplished by two Eastern Conference players in WNBA history.
Due to her tremendous scoring abilities, her incredible free throw shooting, and her team-first mentality lifting the Sky to new heights, Elena Delle Donne has been voted by Sky fans as the greatest player in Chicago Sky history.
