Preview: Sky Seeking First Home Win in First Matchup Against Expansion Tempo

The Chicago Sky are set to take on the expansion Toronto Tempo for the first time in franchise history on Wednesday, May 27,

Though this is the first meeting between the two teams, they have several familiar faces between them. The Tempo selected Marina Mabrey in expansion, who played for the Sky from 2023-24. She set the Sky's all-time single-season three-point record in 2023 and averages 18.0 points while shooting 35.0% from three on 8.6 attempts.

Athlete Brittney Sykes leads the Tempo in scoring, averaging 20.6 points to go along with 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals. She most recently played alongside Sky star Skylar Diggins in Seattle last season and played with Natasha Cloud in Washington earlier in their careers.

Rookie guard Kiki Rice played alongside Sky rookie Gabriela Jaquez, winning a national championship less than two months ago next to each other. Rice and Jaquez are third and fourth in scoring among 2026 draftees after being selected one pick apart.

Guards Maria Conde and Kia Nurse have familiarity with the Sky, with Conde being selected by the team in 2019 and Nurse playing for the team last season.

This is all to say while the Tempo system is new, the key figures within it are not. The Sky are aiming to get their first home win of the season on Wednesday. It won't be an easy task, but getting a win amid the myriad of injuries the team is facing right now would be a nice confidence booster ahead of the final regular season game against Minnesota, an outing that could have major ramifications on the postseason picture in a few months.

While that may be premature, the Sky getting their offense going against the Tempo's 14th-ranked defense would be massive ahead of Commissioner's Cup play. Look for Kamilla Cardoso to keep up her hot streak after averaging 17.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 67.9% from the field in her last three outings.

Sydney Taylor may be a key figure off the bench after she erupted for 11 points and helped the Sky get back into a competitive game against Minnesota on Saturday. Like Taylor, Azurá Stevens helped the team's energy in the second half in her 2026 debut, and she is a candidate to earn more minutes as she continues to make her return from an offseason injury.

The game against Toronto tips off at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 27 inside Wintrust Arena. The Sky close out their four-game home stand with their matchup against Minnesota on Friday.
