Game 2 Eastern Conference Semifinals Preview 9/19
The Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever will square off for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Saturday September 19. WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne will look to continue her stellar season in the playoffs. The Sky had the Fever’s number in the regular season going 4-0.
The Sky won Game 1 in the best-of-three series 77-72 on September 17, with the score not truly indicating how close the game was. It seemed as if the Sky would cruise through the game with a 24-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Fever rebounded with a 20-12 advantage in the second quarter. Delle Donne who received her MVP award before the game, had only two points in the first half.
Sixth Player of the Year Allie Quigley led the Sky with 20 points. Courtney Vandersloot recorded a playoff career-high 19 points. Although Delle Donne only had 14 points on the night, she was a key factor on defense, grabbing eight defensive rebounds and 11 overall. One key in the Sky’s victory was a team shooting percentage of 50 percent behind the three-point line.
What made the win impressive was that Delle Donne was not at her best. Since 2013 through the end of the 2015 regular season, the Sky were 30-10 when Delle Donne scores 20 or more points but only 30-30 with her scoring fewer than 20. The MVP realizes how important it is to have teammates like Quigley step up. “There are shots where Allie knocks it down and I run back smiling because it’s absolutely amazing,” said Delle Donne. “What a pressure release Allie is.”
The Fever’s Tamika Catchings- a former MVP scored 21 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists, but Quigley, Vandersloot and Delle Donne were too much to overcome as the Sky now head to Indiana seeking a win in Game 2. “Last year we went to three games each time. It is crucial to finish out strong, and to finish out on their home court would be big for us,” said a focused Delle Donne.
Watch the game live on NBA TV at 6:00 p.m. CDT. The Sky will return to Allstate Arena for Game 3, if necessary, Monday, September 21 at Allstate Arena at 7:00 p.m. Purchase your playoff tickets by calling 866.SKY.WNBA or www.chicagosky.net.
