Jia Perkins graduated from Texas Tech in 2004 and was drafted with the Chicago Sky in 2005 in a WNBA Expansion Draft. She played with the Sky until 2010 before being traded to the San Antonio Stars. In her first season with the Chicago Sky she played in 30 games, 27 of which she started in and averaged 9.4 points, 3.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game.
In 2007, Perkins played in 33 games where she averaged 11.7 points, 2.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. She had a franchise record on June 29th at Sacramento with 39 points on 17 field goals and five 3- pointers and 10 assists. During this year Perkins was ranked 16th in the WNBA for field goal percentage (46.4) and ranked 4th in 3-point field goal percentage (45.9). Ranked 10th in the league with 50 steals and 1.52 steals per game. June 17 against San Antonio Perkins set a career-high by knocking down 9 of 10 free throws.
In 2008, Perkins started 34 games and averaged 17.0 points per game and was ranked 7th in total points scored in the season (577) for the WNBA. She set a WIBA record with 39 consecutive free throws made and was able to stay perfect from the line from June 3 to July 1. She also ranked in the top 10 in 12 categories for the WNBA including 9th in points per game (17.0), 6th in steals per game (1.88), and 5th in free throw percentage (.891).
In 2009, Jia started in all 34 games, where she averaged 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.15 steals in 27.4 minutes per game. She also ranked second on the team with 931 minutes played. Perkins led the team with 73 steals and ranked second with 450 total points. With her steals per game at 2.15 she is ranked 5th in the WNBA as well as making her first All-Star appearance as a reserve scoring 16 points.
In Jia Perkins final year with the Sky, she started all 34 games and was leading the team in steals with 1.65 per game. She ranked 2nd in points with 10.7. Her steals to turnover ratio was 1.40 leading the WNBA. She ranked 4th in total steals with 56 and averaged 2.40 assists per game and 2.90 rebounds per game. She had a season- high rebounding game at New York on May 16th grabbing seven total that game. She went perfect from the free throw line going 6-for-6 against Atlanta on June 15. After the perfect game from the line that marked the season-bests in both free throws made and free throws attempted. On June 25th versus Washington, Perkins had a season-high five steals. Jia composed a season-best, grabbing five defensive rebounds against Indiana on June 25th. Her final accomplishment before leaving the team in 2010 was a tied career-high with five 3-pointers at Phoenix on August 1st.
2010: Started all 34 games … Led the team with 1.65 steals per game and ranked second with 10.7 points per game … Led the WNBA with a 1.40 steals to turnover ratio while ranking fourth in total steals (56) … Averaged 2.4 assists per game and 2.9 rebounds per game … Collected a season-high seven total rebounds at New York on May 16 … Was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe against Atlanta on June 15, marking season-bests in both free throws made and attempted … Had a season-high five steals against Washington on June 25 … Collected a season-best five defensive rebounds against Indiana on June 27 … Set season-standards with 26 points and 10 made field goals at New York on July 11 … Tied a career-high with five 3-pointers at Phoenix on Aug. 1.
All these stellar accomplishments have landed Jia Perkins sixth on the list of all-time Chicago Sky players.
