2015 Season in Review: Cappie Pondexter
Entering the 2015 season, the Chicago Sky had high expectations. In its previous season, the team made the WNBA Finals for the first time in franchise history but fell to the Phoenix Mercury. Feeling the team needed to make a move to go even further, General Manager and Head Coach Pokey Chatman made a move that spoke volumes. On February 16, 2015, Chatman acquired 10-year veteran Cappie Pondexter from the New York Liberty in exchange for Epiphanny Prince.
The seven-time WNBA All-Star seemed to be what the team was missing from last season. “We were the youngest team in the league but we needed experience… Cappie represents something we obviously need,” said Chatman. The move from New York to Chicago seemed to energize Cappie. In her first season with the Sky, Pondexter averaged 15.0 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game, both of which were up from her previous season (13.2 ppg and 3.4 rpg). Additionally, her field goal percentage drastically improved from .388 to .439. She had season highs of 29 points and seven assists in the Sky’s 96-76 victory over the Connecticut Sun on July 12.
The Chicago native is the fifth all-time leader in field goals made ranks fifth all-time in field goals made with 2,092 and ranks seventh all-time in points with 5,887. Despite missing five games with a concussion last season, the 33-year-old was a key member of the Sky and will be for the upcoming season.
