Sky vs Stars 06/20 Preview
On Saturday, June 20th, the Chicago Sky will face the San Antonio Stars in a road match at the Freeman Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on The U Too. The Sky is coming off a night of many notable milestones. Friday’s game against Atlanta marked Cappie Pondexter’s 300th game in her WNBA career, Courtney Vandersloot’s 1000th career point and Elena Delle Donne’s first double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Despite these highlights, the Sky could not top the Dream, falling 74-73 after an Angel McCoughtry buzzer beater. San Antonio enters Saturday’s contest following a loss to Minnesota. The Sky now hold a record of 2-3 and the Stars are still seeking their first win of the season.
The last time the Sky and the Stars met was in the final regular season game of 2014 at Allstate Arena where San Antonio defeated Chicago 84-72. During this contest, the Sky totaled 29 rebounds and 26 points in the paint. Through the first five games of the season, the Sky averages 45.6 rebounds per game and 37.2 points in the paint. These improvements will aid the Sky in its faceoff with the Stars.
Danielle Adams led San Antonio in the August 17th, 2014 matchup with Chicago. She tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds while guard Jia Perkins added 13 points. The Sky was led by Allie Quigley with 16 points and three rebounds. The lineup for both teams will be different this time around. The Stars are without six-time WNBA All-Star, Becky Hammon, who retired at the end of the 2014 season. Chicago will be withuot absence of Tamera Young, who is out with a thumb injury.
In order for the Sky to continue its dominance on the boards, players such as Delle Donne and Jessica Breland will be called on to step up. Delle Donne and Breland currently average 8.2 and 6.2 rebounds per game, respectively.
