Sky vs Mercury Preview 8/9
On Sunday, August 9 the Chicago Sky will conclude its five-game home stand with a battle against the Phoenix Mercury. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm CT and will be broadcasted on ESPN2. The Sky look rally from Friday night’s 77-63 loss to New York, and grab a win at home before a three game road trip.
After the All-Star weekend, Chicago and Phoenix met at US Airways Center for a 2014 WNBA Finals rematch on July 28. The game included strong performances from both teams, but the Mercury was victorious with an 89-87 overtime win. Elena Delle Donne and DeWanna Bonner dominated the contest in scoring. Delle Donne recorded 32 points for Chicago while Bonner added 34 for Phoenix, leading all scorers.
The Sky and Mercury went back-and-forth during the overtime period, but it was Bonner’s go-ahead three-pointer with 1:21 remaining that sealed the victory for Phoenix. Two other Sky players, Cappie Pondexter (13) and Allie Quigley (14) also scored in double digits during the contest.
In addition to Bonner’s offensive contributions, Brittney Griner has been delivering on the defensive end of the floor. In her first 13 games of the season, Griner is averaging 8.3 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game. She recorded five blocks against Chicago in their last meeting. The Mercury tallied 10 blocked shots against the Sky in that game. Nevertheless, the Sky is prepared to fight back on Sunday. Since playing Phoenix the Sky have tallied 38 blocks over five games. Chicago recorded five blocks against Phoenix, six against Los Angeles, seven against Washington, a season-high 13 against Indiana, and seven more against New York.
“I thought we created some momentum for ourselves and then coming out of the half we struggled to put points on the board. We let them [Phoenix] get momentum, and you can’t do that with any team, let alone the defending champs at home,” said Chicago Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman after the July 28 game.
On Sunday the Sky need to keep momentum for the duration of the game to secure a victory. The team’s effective movement of the basketball will be key. Tune in to ESPN2 at 1:00 pm CT on Sunday to see Chicago in action.
