Sky vs Liberty Preview 8/11

The Sky will travel to New York on Tuesday, August 11 to face the Liberty for the beginning of a three-game road trip. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. CT at Madison Square Garden. The Sky looks to improve its road record by building off the momentum of the team’s thrilling victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday.

The Sky and Liberty have met twice so far this season with each contest being held in Chicago. On both occasions New York topped the Sky. On June 30, Elena Delle Donne led Chicago with 26 points and 13 rebounds. This was not enough to defeat the Liberty who had five players score in double digits. Tina Charles led New York to its 89-81 victory, scoring 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

On August 7 the teams met again, this time with an appearance from Epiphanny Prince whom the Sky traded to the Liberty in an offseason exchange for Cappie Pondexter. Prince led all scorers with a season-high, 30-point performance in addition to dishing out five assists. Charles added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Liberty. Delle Donne and Courtney Vandersloot led the Sky in scoring recording 17 and 13 points, respectively.

With her eighth made free throw of the night, Delle Donne broke her own franchise record for most free throws made in a season with 158. Her previous record of 157 was set in 2013. After Sunday’s game against Phoenix, Delle Donne now has 164 made free throws on the season. Free throw shooting is a strength for the Sky. As a team, Chicago is shooting 85% from the line compared to its opponents’ 77% free throw shooting. The Sky currently leads the league in free throw percentage.

The team’s consistent free throw shooting will be an advantage against the Liberty on Tuesday. Another key to the game will be rebounding. The Sky was outrebounded in the last two contests against the Liberty, so a strong rebounding performance will be critical.
