Sky vs Liberty 5/22 Preview
For the second consecutive season, WNBA action returns to Delaware, as the Chicago Sky host the New York Liberty at the Bob Carpenter Center in the 2015 preseason opener. Once again all eyes will be on Delaware native and University of Delaware alum, Elena Delle Donne. In last season’s preseason matchup at the BOB, Delle Donne recorded a double-double with a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Sky’s 76-69 victory against the Washington Mystics.
The preseason opener marks the first time newly acquired guard, and Chicago native, Cappie Pondexter and first round draft pick Cheyenne Parker suit up in a Sky uniform. Pondexter came to the Sky via an offseason trade with the Liberty in exchange for Epiphanny Prince and Parker was selected by the Sky with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm.
Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman and the Sky are coming off a historic 2014 campaign that had Chicago reaching the 2014 WNBA Finals for the first time in team history. The Sky finished the season with a 15-19 recorded, good enough for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference and a playoff berth. After a remarkable 2014 playoff run, the Sky were victorious against the likes of the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever, but ultimately fell to 2014 WNBA Champion, the Phoenix Mercury.
Eastern Conference All-Stars Jessica Breland and Elena Delle Donne led the Sky throughout the 2014 season. Breland led the way in the regular season with 6.8 rebounds per game. After missing some time in the regular season due to illness, Delle Donne returned to lead the team in the playoffs with 16.8 points per game and 1.56 blocks per game.
Chatman is entering her fifth season as the Sky’s Head Coach and General Manager. She has compiled an overall record of 67-69 over her five seasons, leading the Sky to two postseason appearances including the franchise’s first WNBA Finals appearance.
With the tremendous support of the Delaware faithful, Delle Donne and the Chicago Sky will look to build on the 2014 historic season in what is sure to be an exciting environment here at the BOB.
