Sky Signs Azurá Stevens to Contract Extension

CHICAGO (Feb. 17, 2021) – The Chicago Sky announced today the team has signed forward Azurá Stevens to a contract extension. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Azurá showed last year that she is an important part of how we play, so we wanted to see her going forward in a Chicago Sky uniform,” Sky General Manager and Head Coach James Wade said. “We feel like she’s home, and she feels like she’s home being with us, so it feels great to provide stability for both of us and be able to build with her from here.”

Entering her fourth WNBA campaign, Stevens returns for her second season with Chicago after recording career-highs across the board in her first year with the franchise. Acquired by the Sky in an offseason trade with the Dallas Wings prior to the 2020 season, Stevens started in all 13 of her appearances for Chicago last year, averaging 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in 27.3 minutes of play.

The 2018 All-WNBA Rookie Team honoree left the WNBA bubble in Bradenton, Fla. on Aug. 29 after sustaining an injury in her left knee. She underwent successful surgery in September 2020 and immediately began post-op therapy, and the Sky looks forward to a full recovery prior to training camp for the upcoming 2021 season. Under the new contract, Stevens will remain with Chicago through 2022.

“I want to thank the Sky organization and Coach Wade for this opportunity and for believing in me,” Stevens said. “I have truly enjoyed getting to know the entire organization, my coaching staff, and my teammates. They are the best. It’s going to be a lot of fun continuing to play with my team, in front of the best fans in the league.”

Originally selected 6th overall in the first round of the 2018 WNBA Draft by Dallas, Stevens (6-6, 180) spent her first two WNBA seasons (2018-19) with the Wings before being traded to Chicago in February 2020, in exchange for Katie Lou Samuelson and a 2021 draft pick.
