Sky Runs Past China In Preseason Finale
UNCASVILLE– On Thursday night the defending Eastern Conference Champion Chicago Sky took the court for their third, and final, preseason game of the year against the China Olympic Team at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sky jumped out to an early 9-1 lead in the first four minutes of play and never looked back as they ran away with a 92-59 victory.
“I thought that [the two-day tournament] was a great experience for us,” said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. “It was nice to follow up last night’s game with some intensity and obviously it was a different opponent, but it was nice to see the bounce back from everybody.”
The Sky used a balanced offensive attack to start the game, as six different players contributed to the scoring to create a 22-12 advantage after the first. Cappie Pondexter led the Sky in the quarter with six points and three steals.
After a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, Chicago closed the half on a 21-4 run to take a 52-23 lead into the locker room. Elena Delle Donne led all scorers in the first half with nine points.
Just three minutes into the second half, Delle Donne doubled her point total, scoring nine unanswered points to start the quarter as the Sky mounted a 61-23 lead. Chicago led by as many as 39 (67-28) with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter and maintained the intensity through the end, cruising to a 92-59 win.
Delle Donne finished the game with 18 points in 11 minutes to lead all scorers. The Sky took advantage of the preseason event in Connecticut to gain momentum before the start of the regular season next week.
“We had a great season last year,” said Delle Donne. “Obviously there are some big names that aren’t in the locker room this year but the addition of Cappie definitely puts a target on our back. I welcome that. It means we put together a few good seasons and now we’re a front runner.”
The defending Eastern Conference Champion Chicago Sky’s roster will be finalized to 12 by June 4, before the Sky opens its 10th season at Allstate Arena on June 5th against the Indiana Fever. To purchase tickets call 866.SKY.WNBA.
