The Chicago Sky narrowly lost against the Toronto Tempo in the first matchup in franchise history between the two teams inside the Wintrust Arena on Wednesday, May 27.
Although the Sky lost by seven, letting up 111 points, the Sky still displayed resilience and showcased the positive traits that define the 2026 Chicago Sky. Chicago fought in the game and scored a season-high 104 points in the loss.
Both teams were on fire offensively after losing their prior contests. Sydney Taylor delivered an outstanding, career-high performance with 27 points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench. Taylor, who signed to a training camp contract with the team in the offseason, became the fastest player to record their first career 25+ point game in a Sky uniform. Her 27 points also tied for the most by any player off the bench this season.
Taylor’s execution on offense made an immense impact in the second half as she scored on all three levels, illustrating balance and all-around versatility. She now averages 9.6 points after scoring 23 of her 27 points in the second half.
The Sky themselves set a new season high with 31 assists this season, 10 of which came in the first quarter. Chicago assisted on a whopping 31 of their 36 made field goals.
Veterans Natasha Cloud, Elizabeth Williams and Skylar Diggins all stood out with their play tonight. Cloud contributed a season-high nine assists to go along with 18 points and five rebounds. Diggins scored a season-high 23 points and added nine assists of her own.
Williams continues to see her minutes restriction lifted, playing a season-high 23. She crashed the boards with nine rebounds in tonight’s game and added 11 points and three assists.
Though the game remained a close one throughout, Toronto stayed true to its name through keeping up a fast-paced outing, especially toward the second half. Nyara Sabally proved to be Tempo's star player of the night as she scored a career high of 29 points.
Former Sky guard Marina Mabrey upheld her star-shooting reputation as she created space forthe Tempo, ending the night with 24 points and seven assists. The Tempo’s No. 6 overall pick in 2026, Kiki Rice, showed up and out tonight as well, leading with eight rebounds and seven assists for her team.
Where the Sky fell short was in their control of the glass and their rhythm from the perimeter. The Tempo shot 46.2% from three on 26 attempts, while the Sky connected on just 22.6% of their 31 looks from deep.
Still, tonight's game showed growth by the Sky on the offensive side of the ball, as five players scored in double figures. Chicago was fluid in sharing the ball, but will need to get back into the defensive principles that had them among the league’s best in the early stretch of the season.
Despite the loss resulting in the Sky now being 3-4, they’ll have a chance to move on quickly with a home tilt on May 29 against the Minnesota Lynx. That game tips off at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and is the third and final outing between the two teams this season. Whoever wins that game takes the season series. This will mark the final game of the Sky’s home stretch before Commissioner’s Cup.
