Preview: Sky Look to Defeat Lynx in Final Battle of the Regular Season
By Caitlin Nicholson
The Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx will face off in their final regular-season meeting on Tuesday, July 22, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. CST at Target Center. The Lynx enter the game as the league’s top team and remain undefeated at home with a perfect 12-0 record. If the Sky hope to end Minnesota’s impressive streak, they’ll need to be sharp and ready to compete from the opening tip.
The Sky and Lynx have already met three times this season, with Minnesota holding a 2-1 edge in the series. While the Lynx’s overall record shows a significant advantage, each game has been tightly contested, with both teams battling competitively throughout. In their first meeting on July 6, the Sky lost a close game, falling 75-80. Chicago came out strong with a 24–10 first-quarter lead, but Minnesota answered with a dominant 28-13 second-quarter run that shifted momentum and ultimately set the tone for the rest of the game.
The teams then split their back-to-back matchups on July 12 and July 14. The Sky secured an impressive 87-81 win on July 12, led by Ariel Atkins’ 27 points and a dominant double-double from Angel Reese, who posted 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kamilla Cardoso also contributed 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, providing a powerful presence in the paint. Chicago established an early lead, outscoring the Lynx 57-44 in the first half. Despite a Minnesota comeback in the second half, clutch free throws and a pivotal jumper by Michaela Onyenwere sealed the victory for the Sky.
Two days later, the Lynx responded with a 91-78 win of their own. Despite another dominant double-double from Angel Reese, who posted 22 points and 10 rebounds, Minnesota’s defensive intensity and ability to capitalize on turnovers proved too much for the Sky to overcome. Though the game remained close for much of the contest, the Lynx forced 19 turnovers and exploited transition opportunities in the second half to pull away.
What to watch for the Sky: How they control the tempo on both ends of the floor
The Lynx thrive on a fast-paced game, known for pushing the ball in transition and pressuring opponents into rushed decisions. If the Sky can slow the tempo, focus on half-court offense, and limit the Lynx’s transition opportunities, they can reduce Minnesota’s scoring efficiency and take better care of the ball. If Chicago can control the pace of the game, they’ll give themselves a strong shot at pulling off the upset.
The Chicago Sky have an all time-record of 19-29 against the Minnesota Lynx, and 1-2 for the 2025 regular season.
