NOTES & QUOTES: James Wade Notches Historic Birthday Win; Sky Edge Storm 87-85 in Overtime

GAME HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE

● The Chicago Sky defeated the Seattle Storm 87-85 in overtime, good for the team’s first overtime win this season. It’s also Chicago’s first overtime win at Wintrust Arena since September 13, 2016.

● On his birthday, Chicago Sky General Manager and Head Coach James Wade secured his 43rd win at the helm. This milestone moves Wade past Steven Key, as the Memphis native now boasts the second-most wins of any coach in Sky history.

● In her 350th appearance in the league, Candace Parker moved past Becky Hammon to 15th all-time in WNBA free throws made. The two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player has converted 1,183 free throws and now sits behind Yolanda Griffith (1,232).

● The Sky saw four players (forward Kahleah Copper, guard Allie Quigley, guard Diamond DeShields and Parker) notch at least 10 points a piece.

KEY RUNS

● Seattle went on an 8-0 run over a brief two-minute stretch of play during the first quarter to take an early 12-4 lead over Chicago.

● With two minutes left in the first quarter, the Sky broke out with a 9-1 run to cut the Storm’s early lead to just four points.

● With 2:12 minutes left in the first half, the Sky took a 5-point lead, its largest of the game to that point, after going on a 7-2 run.

● After going on a 7-0 run, Seattle regained the lead with 2:23 to go in the third quarter.

● In the first 3:15 of the fourth quarter, Chicago went on a 10-3 run and took a three point lead.

● Seattle erupted with an 11-1 run and took a seven-point lead with just four minutes left in Sunday’s game.

● Chicago tied the game with 44 seconds left in the fourth quarter after it went on an 8-2 run.

● With just over a minute to go in overtime, the Sky closed out the win with an 8-2 run.

 

KEY STATS

● The Sky defense held the Storm to just 8 second-quarter points, the lowest mark for the Storm this season. Prior to Sunday, Seattle’s lowest total number of second-quarter points was 15 (2x; most recently against Phoenix on July 9, 2021).

● Chicago’s bench outscored the Seattle bench 36-24 and was led by strong outings from Sky guard Allie Quigley (17 points) and center Stefanie Dolson (7 points).

● As a team, the Sky finished 42.9% from the field and 37.5% from three-point land. To compare, the Storm converted 34.5% of their shots from the floor with a 33.3% clip from deep.

● Chicago outscored Seattle 26-24 in the fourth quarter and 8-6 during the five minutes of overtime.

 

CHICAGO NOTES

● 2021 WNBA MTN DEW Three-Point Contest champion and Sky guard Allie Quigley scored 17 points off the bench while finishing 5 of 12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc in Sunday’s contest.

● The Sky recovered after facing an 11-point deficit at one point during today’s game. Chicago’s largest lead against Seattle was 5 points.

● Parker also moved to eighth all-time on the league’s rebounding leaders list, where she currently has 3,016 rebounds and aims to surpass Tina Thompson (3,070 rebounds).

● Chicago forward Azurá Stevens led all Sky players with a plus-minus of + 15 on Sunday, with the next-closest Sky player logging a +8 rating (Dolson). As a team, the Sky combined for a +2 rating and saw four players record a rating higher than zero or negative.

● Before tip-off, Sky center Stefanie Dolson was recognized for her historic achievement as a 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, as the Connecticut product was part of the team that earned the first-ever gold medal in Olympic 3×3 basketball history.

 

SEATTLE NOTES

● Seattle forced 20 Sky turnovers and consequently scored 17 points off these resulting turnovers on Sunday.

● Averaging over 20 points per game in her previous seven against the Sky, Chicago native and Storm guard Jewell Lloyd led Seattle with 26 points.

● The Storm were outscored in the paint (38-46 points), outscored in bench points (24-36) and tied the Sky in fast break points (14-14) as well as team rebounds (10-10).
