Inaugural Chicago Sky Black History Creative Expression Contest

Wed, Jan 20, 2016, 11:09 PM

In honor of Black History Month the Chicago Sky will host a creative expression contest encouraging students in Illinois to positively reflect on their favorite African American leader/icon and how this person inspires them to live out their dreams.

The contest, made possible in part by Sam’s Club, DuSable African American History Museum and Magellan Corporation, is an opportunity for all K-12 students to show their understanding of the importance of acceptance and human rights by sharing their feelings, opinions, experiences and ideas in a creative style. Entries may be in the form of essay, poem, spoken word, song, music, poster, drawing, collage, any art or craft medium, film, dance, or any combination of these.

This contest is open to all Illinois residents from kindergarten through twelfth grade who attend school (public or private) or who are home-schooled. Students may work individually, in teams or small groups, or as an entire class to submit an entry or entries, but only one prize will be awarded per category and entry.

Chicago Sky forward Tamera Young will judge submissions and select one winner at each age level (elementary school, middle school, high school). Winners receive a $500 gift card, provided by Sam’s Club and the Sky Cares Foundation to be used towards school supplies, a tour for their entire class at DuSable African American History Museum guided by Tamera Young and Sky Guy and a Chicago Sky game experience at Allstate Arena in 2016.

Creative submissions can me made online at chicagosky.net or via social media using #MyBHE on Twitter, Instagram and the Chicago Sky Facebook wall. The contest closes on Friday, February 19 at 5pm CST. For more information contact Jordan Johnson at jjohnson@chicagosky.net
