Everything You Need to Know Ahead of the 2025 WNBA Draft Lottery
The Chicago Sky are taking part in the 2025 WNBA Draft Lottery on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. CST/5 p.m. EST. The event will be broadcast on ESPN.
Chicago joins the Los Angeles Sparks, Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings in the 24th annual WNBA Draft Lottery.
The Sky have a 22.7% chance of landing the top selection. However, as part of a February 2023 trade, the Wings have the right to swap draft picks with the Sky, which they are likely to exercise if Chicago’s selection ends up higher than theirs after the drawing. Dallas also has a 22.7% chance at obtaining the top overall selection.
Lottery odds are based on the two-year (2023 and 2024) cumulative records of the four teams that did not make the playoffs in 2024. The Sky have a combined record of 31-49 over the past two years. Below are the odds for all lottery teams and their two-year cumulative record:
- Los Angeles Sparks: 44.2% (25-55)
- Dallas Wings: 22.7% (31-49)
- Chicago Sky: 22.7% (31-49)
- Washington Mystics: 10.8% (33-47)
In the drawing, balls numbered 1-14 will be placed in a lottery machine. Four balls will be drawn to determine a four-digit combination. The team assigned that four-digit combination will be assigned the No. 1 overall pick. The balls will then be placed back into the machine and the process will repeat to determine who picks No. 2 overall. The team with the lowest cumulative record whose assigned numerical combination is not drawn will receive the No. 3 pick, and the remaining team will pick at No. 4.
The remaining selections in the first, second and third rounds of the draft are determined by an inverse order of the team’s 2024 standings. The expansion franchise Golden State Valkyries are selecting fifth in each round. The Sky also hold the No. 10 overall pick in the first round.
The Sky haven’t been in the draft lottery since the 2019 season. Though they most recently selected at No. 3 overall with Kamilla Cardoso in 2024, they acquired that pick in a February 2024 trade. Because Dallas owns the right to swap picks with the Sky, Chicago is unlikely to select No. 1 overall in 2024.
Chicago selected No. 2 overall three times in franchise history. The Sky’s No. 2 overall picks consist of Alaina Coates (2017), Elena Delle Donne (2013) and Sylvia Fowles (2008).
The Sky picked at No. 3 five times before. Players selected at No. 3 by the Sky include Cardoso (2024), Diamond DeShields (2018), Courtney Vandersloot (2011), Kristi Toliver (2009) and Armintie Herrington (2007).
Katie Lou Samuelson (2019), Gabby Williams (2018), Epiphanny Prince (2010) and Candice Dupree (2006) are the Sky’s all-time fourth overall picks.
In all, players selected by the Sky between picks No. 2-4 have gone on to earn a combined 16 All-Star appearances, one Most Valuable Player award, two Rookie of the Year awards and two Defensive Player of the Year awards in a Chicago uniform.
Former No. 2 overall pick Delle Donne is the Sky’s all-time leader in points per game. Fowles is the all-time franchise leader in rebounds, blocks and field goal percentage. Cardoso was named to the 2024 All-Rookie team as the Sky’s most recent top-three pick, while DeShields ranks 10th in Sky history in points. Vandersloot ranks second in points for the Sky and is the team’s all-time leader in assists, steals and minutes played. DeShields and Vandersloot helped the Sky win their first-ever WNBA Championship in 2021. Dupree ranks seventh all-time in points and minutes.
