Chicago Sky’s Courtney Williams was named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced today. This marks the third time in her career and the only Sky player to receive the honor this season.
Her first Player of the Week award was on September 1, 2019. She earned her first Player of the Week award this 2023 season after averaging 20.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game over three games this past week.
The Sky finished the week with three-straight wins, including two on the road against Indiana (September 5) and Connecticut for the regular-season finale (September 10), and one at home against Minnesota (September 8). Against the Fever, Williams finished with 17 points, four assists and a team-high eight rebounds in the 96-69 victory. Williams contributed to Chicago’s hot start in the game, scoring seven of the Sky’s 18 points in the first quarter. Three days later against the Lynx, Williams secured her sixth double-double on the season with 13 points and 11 assists in the win. It was Williams’ third points-assist double-double this season and her fourth game this year with 10 or more assists for the first time in her career.
In the regular-season finale against the Sun, she tallied her second-ever triple-double of this season and her career with a game-high 23 points on 71.4% field goal shooting, 16 rebounds and 13 assists. Her 23 points eclipsed the 3,000 career points mark on Sunday. This was also Chicago’s sixth-ever triple-double in franchise history and the 13th overall triple-double in the 2023 WNBA season. As part of her triple-double, Williams notched a career-high 16 total rebounds and tied her career-high in assists with 13. She is the only player in WNBA history to record 20+ points, 15+ rebounds, 13+ assists and 2+ steals in a game.
Over the past three games, Williams recorded an average 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 9.3 assists. She also finished fourth in the league in assists per game, averaging a career-high 6.3 apg.
The Sky, the No. 8 seed, begins Round 1 of the 2023 WNBA Playoffs on Wednesday, September 13 against No. 1 seed Las Vegas Aces. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. PT (9 p.m. CT) at T-Mobile Arena and will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN.
