Chicago Sky Signs Alanna Smith

 

CHICAGO (February 14, 2023) — The Chicago Sky announced today the team has signed forward Alanna Smith. Per team policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Alanna has exceptional experience playing in the WNBA and with the Australian National Team,” Chicago Sky General Manager/Head Coach James Wade said. “We anticipate Alanna having a great impact with our team this upcoming season and we’re excited to see what she can do in a Sky uniform.”

Smith was originally drafted No. 8 overall in the first round of the 2019 WNBA Draft to Phoenix, where she spent the first three seasons of her career from 2019-21. The 6’4” forward signed a training camp contract with Indiana prior to the 2022 season.

In the condensed 2020 season, Smith appeared in 19 games for the Mercury, where she Scored a career-high 14 points twice and recorded career highs in rebounds and assists in the same year.

She currently plays overseas in Poland with Gorzow Wlkp. and averaging 22.3 points and 9.7 rebounds on 65.0% field goal shooting in 30.0 minutes. Smith also played with Australian team Townsville during the 2022 season. Additionally, she also represented her home country of Australia during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won silver in the 2018 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

She played collegiately at Stanford from 2015-19, where she averaged 11.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in 143 games over her career as a Cardinal. During the 2018-19 season, she was one-of-two players in the country to average 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. She was named Second Team All-America (AP, ESPNW), named 2019 All-Pac 12 First Team and 2019 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Smith joined Elena Delle Donne, Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart as the only players in the past 20 years to finish college careers with totals of at least 1,600 points, 150 three-pointers and 200 blocks.
