Preview Sky vs. Sun 8/25

With only five games left in the regular season, the Chicago Sky (11-18) head into the last stretch of the season and take on the Eastern Conference leading Connecticut Sun (19-10).

All-Star center Stefanie Dolson shot 71% and scored 10 points in the August 20 103-66 loss to the Seattle Storm (14-16). Allie Quigley had a respectable stat line, she put in 9 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 1 steal. Cappie Pondexter contributed another 9 points off the bench.

The Storm had five players score in double-figures and every player on the roster scored in the game. Forward Breanna Stewart led the way with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists. Forward Alysha Clark and guard Jewell Loyd each scored an additional 17 points.

The Storm started off outscoring the Sky 29-15 first quarter and 27-12 in the third quarter, and it was too big of a deficit for the Sky to rise against. The Storm’s three-point shooting was deadly. They collectively shot 12-27 from downtown, while the Sky only shot 3-16.

August 25 will be the third and final regular season meeting between the Sky and Sun. In the previous July 25 meeting, the Sun were the victors 93-72.

Sky’s Quigley dropped a game-high 20 points, and forwards Jessica Breland and Keisha Hampton both scored 12 points.

leading the Sun was Alyssa Thomas, she had 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. The backcourt of guards Courtney Williams and Jasmine Thomas each put in 17 points.

The Sun led 38-32 at the half, but separated themselves further in the second half, including outscoring the Sky 24-15 in the closing period.

The Sky’s inability to get to the free-throw line was problematic during this contest. They were only 2-5 from the stripe compared to the Sun 19-22 free-throw performance.

The Sun are 8-2 in their last ten games and are making a strong push for a top seed in the WNBA Playoffs.
