The Chicago Sky (2-7) look to tie the season series against the Phoenix Mercury (5-4), as the Sky wrap up their three game road trip.
The Sky are coming off a thrilling overtime win vs. the San Antonio Stars. The Sky’s offense was firing on all cylinders with the team shooting a season high 55.4% from the field.
Sky’s Allie Quigley finished the game with 16 points. She scored 9 of the Sky’s 14 points in overtime, and as a team they shot a perfect field goal percentage in the extra period.
Stefanie Dolson was the game-high scorer vs. the Stars with 25 points, including 14 points of them in the first half. Dolson joined the 1,000 point club, by way of a free throw in overtime.
The first meeting vs. the Mercury at All-State Arena June 1, was an offensive outpour for both teams. The back and fourth high scoring 99-91 game had 23 lead changes and 9 ties. The Mercury pulled away to secure the win in the closing minutes. Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner went off for a combined 65 points.
Taurasi tied a career high with hitting eight 3-pointers against the Sky. In doing so, she surpassed Katie Smith in the WNBA record book for the all-time leader in 3-point field goals made.
Sky’s Quigley tied a season high with 17 points in the first matchup vs. the Mercury and has stayed on point since. She has quickly jumped to the Sky’s season leader in scoring at 14.8 points per a game.
Dolson added 21 points vs. the Mercury and shot a career high 6 for 7 3-pointers.
Imani Boyette came close to recording a double-double against the Mercury with 14 points and 9 rebounds in the game.
The free throw shooting disparity was a crucial part of why the Sky came up short against the Mercury. The Sky only shot 4 for 5 from the line while the Mercury shot 24 for 29.
The Mercury have suffered two losses in their last three games. The most recent loss coming at the hands of the defending champion Sparks, 89-87.
Sky vs. Mercury tips off at 9:00 CDT Friday, June 16 at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix. The Sky returns home from their three game road trip Sunday, June 18 to take on the Indiana Fever (4-6).
