Canty in Good Company

It has been home sweet home for the Dominique Canty ever since returning home to Chicago. In her eleventh season in the WNBA and fourth with the Chicago Sky, Canty is slowly climbing the records books, both for the league and for the Sky. The point guard is averaging 7.5 PPG, 2.8 APG and 2.7 RPG over her career, consisting of playing for Detroit and Houston before arriving in her hometown.

Once I found out Chicago had a team, I was excited about it, Canty said. I knew I wanted to get to Chicago and come back and play. Its just been great.

Failure is not in Cantys dictionary. She attended Whitney Young High School where she was a four-time All-State player and named a High School All-American by the WCBA. Canty chose the University of Alabama to play college ball, where she majored in criminal justice and minored in social work. By the time she graduated, Canty finished her career as the Crimson Tides all- time leading scorer-male or female.

That success has followed her to the pro level. Earlier this season, Canty joined the Quad 800 Club. Members in this distinct group have 800 field goals made, free throws made, rebounds and assists. She is one of eight members in the 800 club. Such members include: long time face of the WNBA Lisa Leslie, Tamika Catchings, Sherryl Swoops and last years WNBA Finals MVP Diana Taurasi.

Another exclusive group that Canty joined this season is the 2500 points, 900 rebounds and 900 assists club. Canty became just one of nine members in this discrete group. Some notable representatives in this club are Katie Smith, Vickie Johnson and Shannon Johnson.

Ever since Canty signed with the Chicago Sky in 2007, she has been an instant leader. The current co-captain, voted by her peers, has started all but three games while with the Sky. I got to be a leader on the floor and get the ball to the right people, Canty said. Basically run a team and make sure everything goes smoothly on the court and be a spokesperson for the coach and for the players as well.

Other than rebounding, you will find Cantys name in the top five in just about every other statistical category. How many professional athletes can say that? Here are just some of the stats where she nears the top of the organizations career numbers: Fourth in steals with 102, third in games started with 107, third in field goals made with 276, third in points with 852 and second in assists with 393. Did I mention that she has led the Sky in assists for the past three seasons? Its good to be home for Dominique.
