Three members of the USA Basketball Women’s 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Team, including Stefanie Dolson (Chicago Sky/Connecticut/ Port Jervis, N.Y.), Allisha Gray (Dallas Wings/South Carolina/Sandersville, Ga.) and Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces/Washington/Poway, Calif.), will return to the court for training camp from March 26-30 in San Antonio, Texas.
The fourth member of the team, Katie Lou Samuelson (Seattle Storm/Connecticut/ Huntington Beach, Calif.), is playing for Spanish team Perfumerias Avenida and will not attend training camp.
The USA will be led by Kara Lawson (Duke University), who is the USA Basketball 3×3 women’s coach/advisor, though coaches are not permitted during 3×3 games.
The USA Women’s 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Team will compete for the USA’s final chance at an Olympic berth at the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament May 26-30 in Austria. Featuring 20 women’s and men’s 3×3 national teams, the top three finishing women’s and men’s teams at the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament will earn a berth into the Tokyo Olympic Games.
To help the USA prepare, also attending training camp will be a USA Select Team that includes Ariel Atkins (Washington Mystics/Duncanville, Texas) and Natasha Cloud (Washington Mystics/Broomhall, Pa.).
“Our players have worked hard through the off-season to prepare for our training camps,” Lawson said. “Every time I work with them, I can see the progress, and we will need to continue that leading up to the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Having a high level of focus during these camps is a key ingredient for our group. I look forward to being on the floor with Kelsey, Allisha, and Stefanie and can’t wait to see what Natasha and Ariel add to the group.”
Practices are scheduled for March 27-30. Due to COVID-19 precautions, no media or guests will be allowed to view practices.
USA Basketball will provide media with images and b-roll for non-commercial, editorial use. Further, select athletes participating in the USA training camp will be available via video conference each day to assist media in covering the camp. The video conference schedule will be finalized and announced prior to the start of camp. Media interested in participating in a video conference should contact Jenny Johnston at email@example.com.
Comprehensive COVID-19 protocols will be utilized, including mandatory, daily COVID-19 PCR testing administered to participating athletes, coaches, officials and staff in accordance with USA Basketball health protocols and CDC guidelines.
The USA Men’s 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament Team also will compete for a top-three finish and Olympic berth at the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament from May 26-30 in Graz, Austria.
Eight men’s and eight women’s team will participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games 3×3 tournaments from July to 24-28, 2021.
Already qualified for the Olympics on the women’s side are China, Mongolia, Romania and Russia; while on the men’s side already qualified are host Japan, China, Russia and Serbia. Those berths were awarded in November 2019 and were based on point totals and rankings earned in FIBA 3×3 competitions.
The eighth-and-final Olympic berths for men and women will go to the winning teams at a FIBA 3×3 Universality Qualifying Tournament from June 4-6 in Debrecen, Hungary, which will feature six men’s and six women’s teams from countries that did not have a basketball team at the 2012 or 2016 Olympic Games.
