Sky at Storm Preview 7/17

The Chicago Sky (9-12) start their two-game road trip in Seattle on Sunday as they take on the Storm (8-13) for their first match-up of the season.

Chicago dominated last season’s series with two wins over the Storm. In mid-August, the Sky traveled to Seattle and defeated the Storm 94-84 with impressive performances by five Sky players. Courtney Vandersloot, Elena Delle Donne, Jessica Breland, Cappie Pondexter, and Erika de Souza all scored in the double-digits, which led Chicago to their victory. Delle Donne finished the game with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Breland put up 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, earning her a double-double.

Four players on Seattle also scored double-digit points. Former Sky player, Markeisha Gatling, led the Storm with 16 points and five rebounds in just 12 minutes of play. Forwards, Alysha Clark and Crystal Langhorne, each added 13 points apiece.

The two teams met again at Allstate Arena in early September. The Sky treated their fans to a 28-point blowout win over the Storm, ultimately winning 93-65. Ten Sky players scored throughout the game led by Allie Quigley. Quigley shot 75 percent from the three-point range and led the Sky with 17 points. Sky guard, Jamierra Faulkner recorded 14 points, dished out 6 assists, and snagged 6 steals in the Chicago victory. Seattle guard, Jewell Loyd, led all-scorers with 21 points and she also grabbed 7 rebounds. Jenna O’Hea and Langhorne added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Defense was key in both games for the Chicago Sky. In the overall series, Chicago out-rebounded Seattle 88 to 66 and dominated the offensive boards, grabbing 25 to Seattle’s 12. The Sky capitalized on the Storm’s offensive weakness by stealing the ball 20 times and forcing Seattle to turn the ball over 33 total times.

Chicago won the season series last year 2-0 and look to take the 1-0 lead against the Storm Sunday night at KeyArena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcasted locally on The U Too.
