Week 5: Morton Mustangs

The Chicago Sky has selected J. Sterling Morton High School as the fifth “High School Team of the Week” winner for its 2015 competition. The Morton girls’ basketball team earned the honor after being nominated for outstanding efforts and achievements within its team and the local community.

The Mustangs varsity team is composed of players from both Morton East and Morton West High Schools, and competes in the West Suburban Gold Conference. The Mustangs are off to a strong start this season with an overall record of 12-8 (4-3 record in conference play). Additionally, one of the team’s players was recently named as a Chicago Area Top 50 prospect for girls’ basketball.

Off the court, the Mustangs are successful students and frequent volunteers in their community. Several of the young women are members of the National Honor Society, and achieve honor roll status each quarter. In addition to their academic work, the Mustangs give back throughout the season by volunteering at food pantries, homeless shelters, churches and special needs schools in their area. Later this year, several players plan to participate in park clean-ups and 5K races for charity, continuing their team’s tradition of making a difference in the community.

J. Sterling Morton High School joins Oswego High School, Luther North College Prep, Glenbard East High School and Beecher High School as 2015 award recipients. As a Chicago Sky “High School Basketball Team of the Week” award winner, the Morton Mustangs are invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. During the game, they will be honored on the court.
