Sky should tower over Silver Stars
After falling to Indiana 83-72 in their first home game of the season, the Sky head to San Antonio 1-1. Chicago will face off against the Silver Stars, also 1-1, Wednesday in another tough test against a 2011 playoff team.
The Sky will look to slow down San Antonios star point guard Becky Hammon who led her team in scoring last season and is off to a good start in her 2012 campaign. Hammon scored 17 points and dished out nine assists in the Silver Stars season-opening 88-79 road win over Tulsa and picked up another 11 points and eight assists in an 83-79 loss at Connecticut Friday. The fourteen-year veteran will present a big challenge defensively for the Sky backcourt, but Chicagos decisive edge in the paint may win the day.
San Antonios second-year 6-foot-1 center Danielle Adams, scored a team-high 21 points against the Sun, but she spends most of her time taking perimeter shots. Fowles advantage in height and athleticism should give her an edge on the boards and open up the shooting lanes for Epiphanny Prince and Swin Cash.
Chicago will get even more help down low from ex-Silver Star Ruth Riley, who will square off against her former team for the first time. Riley has added size and presence to the Skys frontcourt at 6-foot-5, but has been quiet on offense two games in. Defensively, Riley and Fowles will try to shut down San Antonios other deadly weapon, Sophia Young. After averaging 13.2 points per game last season, Young has started strong scoring 20 points against Tulsa and picking up nine points and nine rebounds against Connecticut.
The Sky went 1-1 against the Silver Stars in 2011 with Chicago taking the most recent decision 85-73 back on August 14 in San Antonio. The Sky rode a 28-point performance from center Sylvia Fowles to victory and limited Hammon to 14 points and four assists, an effort they will look to repeat Wednesday.
