Memorial Day marked the 2013 WNBA Tip-off presented by Boost Mobile. It was an exciting start to the season as the Three To See began their WNBA careers. The WNBA has announced increases across the board in attendance and website, broadcast and YouTube views.
The second game of the Memorial Day double header on ESPN2, which featured the Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury, was viewed in record-setting numbers. Pulling in 455,000 viewers, the game was the most-viewed WNBA game on ESPN2 in nine years. In total, 314,000 viewers tuned in to the opening day doubleheader, which included the Washington Mystics vs. Tulsa Shock in the first game.
Three To See rookies Elena Delle Donne and Brittney Griner shined in their debuts. Delle Donne lifted her Sky team to a victory with a 22-point outstanding effort over Griners Phoenix, who added two record-setting dunks of her own during the game. WNBA Finals MVP Tamika Catchings also exceled with her 19 points, leading her Indiana Fever, the defending champions, to a win over the San Antonia Silver Stars.
Fans not only viewed the games in record-setting numbers, but also stormed the media and internet as well. The WNBA website saw a 35 percent increase with more than 2.2 million views. The WNBA Channel on YouTube also reached new highs with a record-setting 635,000 videos viewed during opening week.
