Looking for their third straight win, the Chicago Sky traveled to the nations capital to take on the Washington Mystics. The Sky came into the game with a 2-1 record against the Mystics this season, with the home team taking the victory in each contest until tonight. With the 79-73 victory on the road Tuesday, the Sky improve their record to 3-1 against Washington this season and an overall 18-8 record.
After falling behind early in their last two games the Sky hoped to get off to a strong starts against the Mystics. The Sky indeed got a off to a quick start hitting three of their first four shots and jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. However, the Mystics woke up and fired off 12 straight points to take a 14-8 lead. Kia Vaughn led the Mystics with 13 first quarter points helping her team take a 28-17 lead into the second quarter.
The Sky chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter outscoring the Mystics 20-13. Despite trailing by eleven to start the quarter, the visitors were able to cut it to three after five straight points from Courtney Vandersloot. The Eastern Conference leaders headed into the locker room trailing just 37-41 at the half.
The Sky once again found some second half magic as they went on an 8-0 run to start the half giving them a 45-41 lead. They held the Mystics to just twelve points in the quarter allowing them to maintain the lead heading into the fourth, ahead by two points.
The two teams found themselves in a tight fourth quarter that included a combined 24 free throw attempts. The Sky led 70-68 with 1:32 remaining before Courtney Vandersloot hit a three point dagger to put the Sky ahead seven. The Mystics hit two late jumpers to keep themselves in the game, but two Sky free throws sealed the victory.
Elena Delle Donne returned to the lineup to lead the Sky with a game high 24 points and eight rebounds. Courtney Vandersloot played one of her best games this season, contributing a season high 19 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Sylvia Fowles recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Kia Vaughn led the third place Mystics with 21 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
