Experience and leadership are not something that shows up on the stat sheet. Luckily for the Sky, these invaluable characteristics compliment Jia Perkins performance on the court.
Headed into the 2010 season, Perkins was the only remaining player from the Skys inaugural 2006 season. The Co-captain continued to be a leader on and off the court. Having started every game for the past three seasons, Perkins not only shined on offense but earned the frequent pleasure of guarding the opposing teams best perimeter player.
After a slow start, Perkins exploded for 19 and 25 points respectively in back-to-back games in the middle of the roughest part of the 2010 schedule where the Sky played 11 consecutive games against Eastern Conference opponents.
Later in the season, Perkins proved Diana Taurasi and Sylvia Fowles werent the only stars in Phoenix. On August 1 Perkins recorded 23 points, 15 coming from a career-best five 3-point field goals. It seemed as though Perkins helped the Sky to leave the Sun-Devil state with a victory, however, after a questionable call sent Taurasi to the free throw line, the Sky was defeated.
Co-Captain Dominique Canty wasnt the only captain climbing the record books this season. With her 363 points, Perkins surpassed the 2,000 point total for her career, putting her at No. 2 on the Skys all-time list.
Furthermore, she surpassed the 300 steal mark, 56 coming in 2010, cementing her grasp on the top spot in Sky history. Perkins again reminded Sky fans in 2010 of the versatility in her game. The reliable scorer, defender and rebounder will look to improve on all of this seasons numbers when 2011 rolls around.
