Sky players, coaches, and staff joined City Year Chicago to undertake a team service project this weekend at Joyce Kilmer Elementary School as part of WNBA Cares Week of Service. The morning began with an opening ceremony where the team got acquainted with City Year Chicago team leaders. The leaders then continued the opening ceremony with a series of physical exercises to energize volunteers before the event started.
Over 50 volunteers were separated into seven teams to work on separate projects throughout the day. Sky players worked side-by-side with Joyce Kilmer Elementary students and faculty to bring new life to Kilmer as they painted inspirational murals and quotes in the hallways and classrooms around the building. The team also worked on several building projects including building new benches to be placed in the building.
When students and faculty return to Joyce Kilmer Elementary next week they will be surprised with a revitalized gym and classrooms with new paintings, inspirational quotes, and benches that bring life and community to the school. Thanks to the Chicago Sky and City Year Chicago, Joyce Kilmer Elementary has created a learning environment that will stimulate creative thinking and strong community for years to come.
The Chicago Sky’s foundation, Sky Cares is committed to building relationships with organizations and youth in the community.
