Sky vs Sparks Preview 5/24

The Chicago Sky returns home to take on the Los Angeles Sparks at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

The matchup will mark the first meeting between the respective team’s superstars Elena Delle Donne and Candace Parker since the roster for the US Women’s National team for the 2016 Olympics was announced. Parker, a gold medal winner in 2008 and 2012, was seen as a surprise omission from Geno Auriemma’s squad, while Delle Donne will be representing her country for the first time. Last season, Delle Donne averaged 23.4 points and 8.4 rebounds, posting the best offensive rating in WNBA history on her way to the 2015 WNBA MVP Award. Candace Parker played only 16 regular-season games in 2015, but averaged a career high 6.3 assists per game, ranking 1st in the league 19.4 points (4th), 10.1 rebounds (1st), 1.8 blocks (4th) and career high 1.9 steals (5th) per game, becoming the first player in league history to average 10+rebounds and 6 +assists per game.

The Sky’s record sits at 1-2 followed an 87-81 loss to the Atlanta Dream on Sunday, May 22. Jamierra Faulkner made the start for Courtney Vandersloot, who sat with an injured ankle, scoring 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Cappie Pondexter led the team with 17 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, while Jessica Breland posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort. The Sky blocked 11 shots for the game, but was unable to recover from a 12-2 Dream run that closed out the third quarter.

The Sparks head to Rosemont with a 3-0 record, after a 79-72 overtime victory over the New York Liberty on Saturday, May 21. Nneka Ogwumike scored 25 points, 15 rebounds and 3 steals, Parker contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Kristi Tolliver, who played 27 games for the Sky after being selected with the third overall pick of 2009 Draft, scored 13.
