MINNESOTA- The Chicago Sky (7-10) were defeated by the Minnesota Lynx (15-3) 87-82 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Elena Delle Donne led the Sky with a personal and WNBA season-high 38 points, along with 10 rebounds. Jamierra Faulkner also contributed a season-high 18 points and dished out eight assists in a strong effort off the bench. Though the Sky led by as much as 10 in the third quarter, they were unable to hold on in the fourth falling 87-82 in a highly competitive matchup that saw 18 lead changes and 10 ties.
After a slow start from the Sky the Lynx would lead by as much as nine points in the first quarter with a score of 13-4. A strong defensive effort paired with fantastic ball movement and three-point shooting helped the Sky slowly claw back as Faulkner steered the offense dishing out four of the Sky’s five assists in the final seven minutes. Delle Donne led the Sky’s early scoring attack as she contributed 12 of the Sky’s 30 first quarter points, helping the team to a 30-24 lead going into the second quarter.
Though the Sky were outscored 28-21 in the second quarter, Delle Donne would continue her offensive hot streak, going a perfect 5-5 from the field in the 2nd quarter scoring 13 points, six of which came from beyond the arc, and pulling down 3 rebounds. Chicago’s bench also played a large part in the Sky’s offensive attack as they collectively scored 18 points. The highly contested second quarter saw seven lead changes and five ties as the Sky trailed just one point going into the half, 52-51.
The Sky scored nine straight points to start the second half and would lead by as much as ten for the first double-digit lead of the game. Though the Sky’s offense slowed down, Faulkner helped the Sky hold on to the lead in the third quarter scoring ten points. The Sky finished the third with a 68-63 lead outscoring the Lynx 17-9 in the quarter.
The Sky were unable to keep their offense ignited in the fourth being outscored by the Lynx 26-14 despite Delle Donne adding eight more points to finish with a 38-point performance tying the WNBA season high for points in a game.
