Week 2: Trinity Blazers
The Chicago Sky has selected Trinity High School as the second weekly winner of its 2016 “High School Team of the Week” program. They receive the recognition after being nominated for their exceptional achievements on the court and in the classroom, as well as their positive impact in the community.
Despite a preseason coaching change, the Trinity Blazers have maintained momentum from last season after outlasting top-ranked Whitney Young in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Super-Sectionals. The team currently holds a 7-3 record and won their annual Thanksgiving tournament for the second consecutive year. The Blazers have also been invited to compete in the NIKE Tournament of Champions over winter break. The program’s goal this season is to win the IHSA State Championship.
As a team, the Blazers have upheld a team grade point average of 4.35 on a 5.0 scale. They are active in the community by teaching basketball skills to youth each fall and summer. With the holidays quickly approaching, many of the players recently participated in Trinity’s Toy Drive, which delivered more than 600 presents to families in need.
Trinity is the second team to be acknowledged as a 2016 award recipient. As a Chicago Sky “High School Basketball Team of the Week” award winner, the Trinity Blazers are invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.
