Week 11: Fremd Vikings

The Chicago Sky has selected Fremd High School as the eleventh “High School Team of the Week” winner for its 2015 competition. The team earned the honor after being nominated for outstanding efforts and achievements as a team and within the local community.

The Fremd Vikings secured their sixth straight Mid-Suburban League title during the 2015 regular season. The team entered the 2015 IHSA state playoffs with their goals set on winning the first state girls’ basketball title in school history. Earlier this week Fremd defeated Huntley High School in the Class 4A Hoffman Estates Supersectional to win their first Supersectional title since 1977. The Vikings (28-4) advance to play New Trier in the state semifinals on Friday night at Redbird Arena in Normal, IL.

Senior guard Haley Gorecki has been Fremd’s leader on the court and in the community this season. The Duke-bound guard was selected as one of Gatorade’s Three Pillar Candidates. Each year, Gatorade recognizes one student-athlete from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. who embodies its Player of the Year program’s three pillars: athletic production, academic achievement and exemplary character. Finishing her career as the second player in Fremd girl’S basketball history to reach 2,000+ points, Gorecki also serves as a member of Fremd’s National Honor Society chapter and volunteers locally on behalf of an animal shelter.

Gorecki’s actions have inspired the entire Fremd team to give back in the community this season. When the Vikings aren’t on the court, they spend their time volunteering with Feed my Starving Children to package food for malnourished children in over 70 countries. The Vikings also participate in Read-to-Connect, where they visit with local elementary schools and read to the students.

Fremd High School joins John Marshall Metropolitan High School, Oswego High School, Luther North College Prep, Glenbard East High School, Beecher High School, J. Sterling Morton High School, Reavis High School, Benet Academy, Lyons Township High School, and Prospect High School as 2015 award recipients. As a Chicago Sky “High School Basketball Team of the Week” award winner, the Marshall Commandos are invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.
