Week 7: Benet Redwings

The Chicago Sky has selected Benet Academy as the seventh “High School Team of the Week” winner for its 2015 competition. They earned the honor after being nominated for outstanding efforts and achievements within their team and the local community.

The Benet Lady Redwings compete in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, and the varsity team has a 22-2 record. This season, the Lady Redwings have won a trio of tournaments, two of which took place on their home court. In addition to the Lady Redwings’ standout success as a team, two of the team’s seniors were recently honored for scoring their 1,000th career points. With all-around effort contributing to the team’s 4th place rank in conference, the Lady Redwings will look for a few more wins to end their season strong heading into the state tournament.

The team’s point guard, Kathleen Doyle is one of the top ranked guards nationally in the class of 2016, being recruited by schools from the Big Ten, Big East, PAC 12, SEC and ACC. Doyle is also an A-plus student who serves as a leader for her team in the classroom. Benet’s players are hard workers in their school and in the community. Many of the Lady Redwings are members of the National Honor Society (NHS), including Emma Hlavin who is currently serving as the Society’s Vice President. While the Lady Redwings are often busy with school and sports, they always reserve time to give back in the community. The team recently spent a day packaging meals for Feed My Starving Children, which is an organization that sends food to malnourished children across the globe.

Benet Academy joins Oswego High School, Luther North College Prep, Glenbard East High School, Beecher High School, J. Sterling Morton High School and Reavis High School as 2015 award recipients. As a Chicago Sky “High School Basketball Team of the Week” award winner, the Benet Lady Redwings are invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. At halftime of the game, the team will be honored at center court.
